Museum Abteiberg is delighted to receive a generous donation from the Hoffmann family.
The Hoffmann Collection comprises works of contemporary art in various media, acquired over the past five decades by Erika and Rolf Hoffmann. First located in Mönchengladbach, later in Cologne, the collection moved with the Hoffmann’s relocation to Berlin, where it has been open to the public on Saturdays since 1997.

Hoffmann felt close to the museum for as long as they lived in Mönchengladbach
and supported it to the best of their ability. Inspired by their exchange with
artists whose works they had become acquainted with in the Museum in
Mönchengladbach, they began collecting in the late 1960s. They have continued
to follow current developments and questions in contemporary art ever since. Now
a total of six works by Isa Genzken, Mike Kelley, Gordon Matta-Clark, Steve
McQueen and Felix Gonzalez-Torres / Christopher Wool are being added to
Museum’s collection, selected by the Museum Abteiberg with the aim of
supplementing the collection’s holdings with these different artistic positions
at precise points of intersection. Isa Genzken, Mike Kelley and Gordon
Matta-Clark already have works in the museum collection and are now more fully
represented. A collaborative work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Christopher Wool
and a film by Steve McQueen add important new positions.
The donation will be presented to
the public on March 10 with the Hoffmann family in attendance.
