The exhibition “Sour Gnossiennes”, from the 32nd studio-scholarship holder Evelyn Taocheng Wang, will be on view from August 23 until October 25, 2020 in the Café of Museum Abteiberg. In her artistic practice, Evelyn Taocheng Wang deals with questions about individually and culturally determined identities: How does cultural influence influence our self and external perception? How are identity and the perception of the body constituted? Wang tells stories in poetic images and texts, in which personal feelings, individual dramas are interwoven with fictional stories. In addition to drawings and paintings, Wang works with video, performances and most recently with clothing and fabrics.
During her six-month stay in Mönchengladbach, the artist developed a new body of work that consists of a series of drawings. The exhibition title refers to the small, poetic piano pieces by the French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925). Their melancholic mood reminds Evelyn T. Wang of people quietly waiting for their bus on a gray and rainy day.
The city of Mönchengladbach’s international studio-scholarship is made possible by the Josef and Hilde Wilberz Foundation. In cooperation with the cultural office Mönchengladbach.
