On the occasion of the major exhibition and event program “beuys2021” in North Rhine-Westphalia, which will be presented in more than 20 institutions, museums, universities and other places associated with Beuys on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Joseph Beuys, Museum Abteiberg is showing two parallel exhibitions.

INSTITUTIONAL CRITIQUE: THE MUSEUM AS A SITE OF PERMANENT CONFERENCE (J.B.)

With two projects the museum aims to bring Beuys’ time in relation to the contemporary present. Just like in an open workshop, visitor will be able to experience aspects of preservation, research and mediation: in the form of a living archive, which for the first time showcases recently acquired works from SAMMLUNG/ARCHIV ANDERSCH and highlights the importance of archival work in the art of the 1960s and 70s. At the same time, a new site-specific project will be on view, which picks up the tread of Beuys’ 1967 show in Mönchengladbach: in 2021 the institution “museum” will be re-examined and questioned anew; the artist invited London-based

On the occasion of “beuys2021”, Museum Abteiberg will show WORK REPORT COLLECTION/ARCHIVE ANDERSCH. Inspired by Joseph Beuys’ understanding of the museum as an institution, the curators reflect on their current work behind the scenes. Alluding to Beuys’ thinking about the meaning of the institution of the museum, will not be just about an exhibition: Beuys’ history in Mönchengladbach provides an occasion to address the tasks of the museum – collecting, preserving, researching, presenting, and mediating – in a new way together with the audience

Since the acquisition of the SAMMLUNG/ARCHIV ANDERSCH in 2017, the research department and the collection of Museum Abteiberg has been busy inventorying the extensive new acquisition and working on its permanent presentation. Erik Andersch’s collection includes art works, books, as well as historical documents of numerous artists such as Ay-O, Joseph Beuys, Henning Christiansen, Robert Filliou, Dorothy Iannone, Alison Knowles, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Dieter Roth, Takako Saito, Daniel Spoerri, André Thomkins, Ben Vautier, Robert Watts or La Monte Young.
