Lin + Lam, a New York based duo consisting of artists and researchers Lana Lin und H. Lan Thao Lam, are screening their latest collaboration, a work based on the story of India’s lost rocket mail pioneer Stephen H. Smith. In 1934, in the seas off Saugor island, Stephen H. Smith attempted to send a total of 143 letters using a rocket, which would prove an incredible advantage for connecting India’s most rural areas. The experiment failed as the rocket ended up exploding midair. 140 of the 143 letters were retrieved, but 3 were lost. Three Missing Letters tells the story of those letters, speculating on their possible contents.

The KW Production Series was initiated in 2018 by the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in collaboration with OUTSET Germany_Switzerland and the Julia Stoschek Collection, produced by Mason Leaver-Yap, KW’s Associate Curator. The presentation at Museum Abteiberg is curated by Haris Giannouras, Assistant Curator at Museum Abteiberg.
